48 HOURS IN PARIS

Mine was the twilight and the morning. Mine was a world of rooftops and love songs. - Roman Payne

We lived in the city like one of them. Like the locals we could have been had I come here to study ten years ago, before life decided it had other plans for me. We explored and experienced it with our senses, rather than a to-do list of tourist spots, and these were the best sights, sounds and tastes we stumbled upon whilst we wandered.

A HOME IN THE HILLS

SOMETHINGOFNOTHING_OPENROAD

Things are different out here. Particularly in winter, when the days darken and time slows down until you’re almost certain it’s no longer moving at all. The mountains are all rugged ridges and unforgiving gullies, their summits shrouded in mist, leaving the vast valleys and sleepy villages below in shadow. I grew up here...

UNRESOLVED

SOMETHINGOFNOTHING_OPIEBED

Hurrying headlong into the New Year with my lofty goals is a sure-fire way to set myself up for a fall, and that fall will inevitably see all my good intentions and great plans scuppered for yet another year. Quite frankly, how am I meant to run ten miles when I’ve been inhaling mince pies for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the last six weeks?

48 HOURS IN COPENHAGEN

SOMETHINGOFNOTHING_COPENHAGEN

Compact, environmentally-conscious, unquestionably charming and so incredibly cool, 48 hours was all it took for me to set my heart on Copenhagen as my spiritual home. We only really scratched the surface of this impeccably designed and incredibly efficient city, but these were some of my favourite spots from the two days we spent there...

MAKING SOMETHING OF NOTHING

“Creativity takes courage.”
— Henri Matisse

This post - well, this site actually - has been sitting pretty on my desktop for the past six months, and at the back of my mind for the past six years. As a perfectionist - and in the interest of transparency, a tireless procrastinator - it's likely that if I don't publish it now, I will still be sitting here in another six years time, riddled with regret that I didn't just start something sooner,

So, here it is. Something of Nothing. Taking its name from my predisposition to worry - always making something of nothing - and my creative aspirations - always making something out of nothing! With a tendency to let my inner critic talk any can-do attitude I might have into taking a nap instead, this space will serve as a constant reminder that done is better than perfect, and something is better than nothing.

Reason no. 3,526,187 why packing up our little life and running for the hills was possibly one of the best decisions we've ever made ❄️
AD I've always been slightly frustrated by the fact that I'm a bit of a jack of all trades and master of not-very-much. I've never been able to decide whether it's taking photographs that makes me feel most like myself or calligraphy that lights the
One week in our new home. A two hundred year old beauty with picture rails and stained glass windows and high corniced ceilings (and dust and boxes and walls full of holes, for balance), in a proper town full of old red brick mills, hills and twinkly
Twenty years today since I was diagnosed with the tricky, relentless bastard that is type 1 diabetes and I feel like that deserves to be documented because it's been the biggest and longest lesson in resilience, surrender, patience and fortitude.
Today and always. We need to listen and learn, and we need to do better.
